Ethiopian Coffee Guide: Yirgacheffe vs Sidama

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, and two of its regions dominate specialty menus: Yirgacheffe and Sidama. Both produce stunning beans, but they cup quite differently.

Yirgacheffe: floral and delicate

Yirgacheffe coffees are famous for floral aromatics - jasmine, bergamot - and bright, tea-like acidity. Washed Yirgacheffe is clean and elegant; natural lots bring intense tropical fruit and lemon notes. Grown at 2000-2400m, it is a favorite for pour-over and for adding brightness to espresso blends. Try our Yirgacheffe Natural SOE for a fruit-forward espresso with lemon and tropical fruit notes.

Sidama: juicy and complex

Sidama, Yirgacheffe's neighbor, produces fuller, juicier cups - think tropical fruit, berries and a syrupy body, often with a black tea finish. Natural-processed Sidama lots from high altitudes (2000m+) are especially prized. Our Sidama Bensa and Sidama G1 lots show off this profile beautifully, in the cup and in blends.

Which one for your menu?

If you want delicate florals and bright acidity, choose Yirgacheffe. If you prefer juicy, full-bodied fruitiness, choose Sidama. For espresso, both work - Yirgacheffe adds lift, Sidama adds body. Many of our premium blends combine the two, and a rotating Ethiopian SOE keeps your menu exciting.
